Emergency Travel Documents (ETD)

An Emergency Travel Document (ETD) is a temporary travel document valid for five (5) days, including the date of issue. It may be issued in emergency situations when an applicant is unable to obtain a new passport in time. For example, it may be required if a traveller in transit needs to continue their journey but has lost their passport or had it stolen. An ETD may be used only to return to Italy or to the country in which the applicant has permanent residence, as evidenced by their registration with A.I.R.E. (the Registry of Italians Residing Abroad).

The applicant must appear in person at the Embassy to apply for an ETD.

Required documents for an ETD application:

  • a duly completed ETD application form;
  • two identical, recent, color photographs taken from the front against a white background, issued within last six months and compliant with the ICAO standards;
  • a copy of an identification document containing the applicant’s photograph and signature, such as an identity card or passport. A valid driving license may also be accepted as proof of identity;;
  • A copy of the travel ticket or itinerary showing a departure date within five days of the ETD application.

Applicants are advised to visit the Consular Office two to three days before their scheduled departure. This allows for greater flexibility in the event of transport strikes, flight cancellations or changes to the departure date by the airline.

NOTE: Malaysian authorities permit travelers to leave the country using an ETD only after they have obtained a SPECIAL PASS from the Malaysian Immigration Department.
