Italian cinema returns to Malaysia this September with Italian Screens, a special three-weekend showcase bringing six contemporary Italian films to audiences in Kuala Lumpur. Presented and curated by the Embassy of Italy in Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with the International Department of Cinecittà and GSC International Screens, the programme will run from 26 Sept to 11 Oct 2026 at GSC Mid Valley. Italian Screens is the international programme promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and coordinated by the International Department of Cinecittà.
Conceived by Department Director Roberto Stabile, Italian Screens aims to promote the international circulation of contemporary Italian cinema while creating new opportunities for cultural exchange, distribution and collaboration across the audio-visual sector. Across three weekends, audiences will have the opportunity to discover a diverse selection of the acclaimed Italian cinema, spanning comedy, drama, family stories and human relationships, while exploring the humour, emotions and social realities that continue to shape contemporary Italy. Following its presentation in cities around the world, Italian Screens continues to strengthen the international presence of Italian cinema, bringing contemporary Italian stories to audiences beyond Italy and creating new connections between the Italian film industry and local cultural and cinematic communities.
Together, the six films reflect the diversity and vitality of contemporary Italian cinema, moving effortlessly between comedy, drama and stories of human connection. From the resilience of a woman confronting the expectations of family and society in C’è ancora domani (There’s Still Tomorrow), to the stories of friendship, creativity and female solidarity in Diamanti (Diamonds), contemporary Italian cinema continues to portray everyday life with humour, warmth and emotional precision. La vita da grandi (Siblings) explores the complexities of family and growing up, while Napoli-New York (Naples to New York) follows two children whose journey from post-war Naples to New York becomes an unexpected story of courage, friendship and discovery. Benvenuti in campagna (Green Family) turns an affectionate and ironic gaze towards the contradictions of rural life, while Il bene comune (The Greater Good) examines the choices and responsibilities that emerge when individual interests meet the needs of a wider community.
The Embassy of Italy in Kuala Lumpur also extends its appreciation to Knowmad Productions, Branding Partner for Italian Screens, for its valued support and cooperation, and to Cinema Online and Goggler, the Official Media Partners, for helping bring Italian Screens and contemporary Italian cinema to a wider Malaysian audience. All films in the programme will be screened at GSC Mid Valley, Hall 10, every Saturday and Sunday from 26 Sept to 11 Oct, with two films presented each day. Each title will be screened twice, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the full showcase line-up. All films will be screened in Italian with English subtitles. Tickets will be available at a flat rate of RM15 each via GSC e-payment services on www.gsc.com.my, GSC Mobile App or GSC Mid Valley kiosks from noon onwards on 24th September.
