LEARNING ITALIAN – THE WHY AND THE WHERE

Italian is currently one of the most widely spoken native language in the European Union (67 million people, 15% of the total EU population); it is spoken as a second language by another 13.4 million EU citizens (3%), as well as in non-EU European countries (such as the Vatican City, Switzerland, Albania and the UK), and counts approximately 85 million speakers the world over.

Italian is also the 4th most studied language in the world as a second language, and every year over 2 million people (in more than 115 different countries) decide to learn it for the most varied reasons.

But, why do they decide to learn Italian? Because…

  • they wish, one day, to visit Italy, the country with the highest number of UNESCO world heritage sites in the world;
  • Italian is an asset for employment opportunities, professional growth and career development not only in sectors in which Italian companies are traditionally world leaders – such as fashion, design, music and performing arts, cinema and other media, museum science, art history and fine arts, food and beverage production and distribution in addition to haute cuisine, football, the luxury car industry and engineering in general, tourism – but also in the sectors more technologically advanced such as aerospace, renewable energy, circular economy, oil and gas, petrochemistry, in which Italy is equally one of the leading countries at world level;
  • Italian is the language most linked to the world of art and culture, having influenced all major areas of life, from painting to architecture, from literature to music, from design to food and wine… and the list goes on…;
  • Italian is known as the language of music because of its use in musical terminology and opera; numerous Italian words referring to music have become international terms because the vast majority of the most important early classicalcomposers were Italian;
  • Italian is famous for its musicality, its melodic and caressing lilt, thanks to which it is renowned as one of the most loved languages throughout the world.
